Abuja — The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) initiated a high-level engagement with the Federal Ministry of Works on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, to foster closer collaboration on matters of infrastructure development and engineering standards.

The COREN delegation, led by the President, Engr. Prof. Sadiq Zubair Abubakar, FNSE, FAEng, FNIAE, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency Engr. Sen. Nweze David Umahi, FNSE, at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja.

👥 The Delegation

The COREN President was accompanied by the Registrar of the Council, Engr. Prof. Adisa Ademola Bello, FNSE, FAEng, and other key members of the COREN management team. The visit underscores the regulatory body’s commitment to ensuring quality assurance and adherence to professional ethics within the engineering sector, a sector central to the Ministry of Works’ mandate.

🤝 Focus on Quality and Infrastructure

While the full details of the discussions were not immediately released, the courtesy call is expected to center on critical areas of national importance, including:

  • Implementation of Engineering Regulations: Ensuring all engineers and construction firms working on federal projects are properly registered and compliant with COREN standards.

  • Infrastructure Quality Control: Discussing strategies to enhance the quality and longevity of federal roads, bridges, and other civil engineering projects across the country.

  • Capacity Building: Exploring avenues for collaboration between COREN and the Ministry to improve the professional development and training of engineers employed in the public sector.

The meeting brings together two prominent leaders in the engineering field—Prof. Abubakar, the head of the profession’s regulatory body, and Senator Umahi, a seasoned engineer and politician now directing the nation’s infrastructure drive. This synergy is anticipated to lead to policy decisions that will significantly impact the practice and quality of engineering works in Nigeria.
